Arranging external wall insulation may seem like a big decision, but with the right guidance it is a straightforward process where the benefits significantly outweigh any perceived risks.
In this blog post we run through the process we follow with our clients from first contact to completed project, to show you how painless a process it can be with a quality installer.
Do you need external wall insulation?
You may be wondering if your home is suitable for external wall insulation (EWI), or if you would be better off insulating your loft or cavity walls instead. We provide free telephone advice to anyone who contacts us to run through the insulation options available for your type of home.
Typically external wall insulation is the best choice for homes without cavity walls, and where other options such as loft insulation have already been completed, or are not possible for whatever reason.
We also get enquiries from home owners who are looking to add a fresh render finish to their homes, perhaps to replace an old pebbledash, and are considering installing EWI to provide extra energy saving benefits at the same time.
Which type of EWI is right for me?
Some of our clients do thorough research before they even contact us, to gain a good understanding of the range of EWI products available. They then approach us with their preferred make and finish in mind, to get a quotation for the installation project.
However, that is not essential, as we provide all our enquriers with as much information as they want, providing advice based on many years of experience in the sector. Some types of render (see our previous blog post) are better performing than others, and we will provide you with the pros and cons of each render type so that you can decide what is right for you.

Your property survey
If you chose to work with us we will arrange a survey of your property as the first stage of your EWI installation project. The survey typically takes place within 7-10 working days and will involve us visiting your home to inspect the walls, access and any other considerations that we need to take into account.
Planning your project
Once we have all the information we need about your property we will supply you with a quotation within 5 working days. This will include all materials, scaffolding, labour and project management to ensure that your home renovation project runs smoothly.
If we have any further questions or decisions for you to make we will contact you again before sending the quote, to ensure that the price we quote is the price you ultimately pay.
We can also provide you with details of our finance packages – from interest free finance to buy now pay later, enabling you to spread the cost of your home improvement project over 60 or 120 months.
Answering your questions about EWI
We are happy to answer any questions you might have about the quote, the installation process or the products we have recommended. We will provide you with a dedicated contact for the planning stage of the process so that you can get to know us, and we can get to know you.

The installation process
Once you give us the green light and pay the initial deposit we will plan the EWI installation to suit your needs.
The schedule will depend on the type of installation you need, the size of your property, complexity of the project and both our availabilities. Obviously you will want the installation to take place when it is convenient to you, and as a small, friendly firm we use only our own, qualified installers so we schedule each project carefully.
Typically we can install your EWI within 2-4 weeks of your order being placed.
Installing your external wall insulation
Once your installation date arrives we will be on site at your property for around 2-3 weeks. The exact duration will depend on the size of your property and the complexity of the job.
The EWI installation is also impacted by the weather, as there are some weather conditions that make our work either unsafe or are not suitable for the materials we use. For instance, in very windy weather it is unsafe for our team to be up high on scaffolding. As a certified Safe Contractor we take our safety obligations very seriously.
Very cold or wet weather will have a detrimental effect on the final coatings of your render finish. We want to ensure that your property’s new EWI and render look fantastic and last well beyond the guaranteed 10-25 year period. Therefore we will advise you if the weather conditions are going to play havoc with the coatings, and will delay the work until the weather improves.
After the installation itself is complete we will advise you of the arrangements for removing the scaffolding and skip, if they’re still on site. We know that clients want to show off their property’s new curb appeal as soon as possible, so we do everything we can to clear up quickly.
We’ll ask you to check your property to ensure that you are 100% happy with your new external wall insulation and render finish. If there are any issues we will sort them out quickly. (Our 5 star reviews will hopefully reassure you that we deliver a great service for clients!)
We’ll apply for all the relevant certificates for you, including the buildings control certificate, your 10-25 year insurance-backed warranty, and the manufacturer’s warranty. These will be sent to you in the post direct from the relevant body, or via email if you prefer.
Care instructions and further details of your WEI/render system will be sent too. We’ll make sure that you have our contact details in case of any further questions.
Payment options for EWI
Whilst external wall insulation will save you money on bills and home maintenance in the future there is naturally an upfront investment needed for the installation. We offer very competitive quotes for home-owners without compromising on quality or service.
In order to spread the cost of your home improvement we schedule payments in three stages. This ensures that you are not paying all your money upfront, and allows you to see the work that you are paying for. It also means that if there are unforeseen delays to the project, the weather for instance, you will not pay any more until the work is progressed or finished.
The payment stages are:
- Deposit payment – typically 40% of the overall project cost is paid when the project is agreed.
- Mid-stage payment – 30% of the overall cost is paid when work is underway - once the initial render coat is applied to your property.
- Final payment – The remaining 30% balance is paid once work is complete.
We also offer 0% finance and buy now pay later credit should you wish to spread the cost of your EWI installation further.
